Direct Hoist rapidly heading to net zero

Environmental awareness isn’t something you’d normally associate with the construction sector. Indeed, it’s reckoned that a third of the UK’s entire carbon emissions come from the built environment.

So, the industry must create and maintain a sustainable outline for the future. Direct Hoist is an ever-expanding construction hoist hire and sales specialist that is leading the field in environmental awareness.

Company founder Rob Wilson says, “Direct Hoist has spent the past three years minimising our carbon footprint, crafting a robust strategy for our Net Zero future, and pushing forward with our written policy for our Construction Line (Silver) accreditation.”

Rob’s approach started with the basics: long-life, low-energy LED lighting was fitted to the firm’s premises to replace inefficient equipment; recycling is rigorously monitored and separated to minimise general waste; scrap materials are weighed in. Then came switching electricity supplier to a 100% renewable electricity produced by wind and solar farms for the firm’s workshops and offices, and sustainable practices throughout the entire business and favours suppliers that are either local (to cut transportation) or offer green credentials.

Direct Hoist has added a fully electric Corsa to its fleet of diesel-powered vans that run on 100% renewable HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) fuel, so now even a local supply run is fully renewable powered.

Direct Hoist is also investing in lithium-ion battery-powered lifts. These lifts can carry 120kg up to heights of 10m and are controlled wirelessly by a smart-phone app. They’re ideal for transportation and installation of solar panels.

Most importantly, the inclusion of a hoist on any construction site has an added environmental benefit due to its manpower-saving efficiency. Construction hoists dramatically reduce project timescales – the speed and ability of a lifting platform to take tools and materials up multiple storeys can knock weeks off a large scheme – thereby minimising workers’ journeys to and from site.

Rob says, “Direct Hoist is committed to going green, and we’re rapidly heading to net zero.”
